Target is the latest retailer to add standalone stores to its roster of locations.

The company announced that it will open a standalone C9 Active Apparel branded specialty store in San Francisco in October. The chain will also be opening its first traditional Target store in the city at that time. The standalone store will be on the street level below the City Target store.

The C9 store will be 3,000 square feet and feature Champion brand sportswear for men and women as well as other athletic gear and accessories.

A company spokesperson said the standalone store is a way to introduce one of the company’s more popular brands to its new location. The company hasn’t said if this is part of a test or if it will launch other standalone stores in other cities and/or for other brands and product categories.
